Mr Martin was a respected senior man and community leader in Mimili Community. Born around Pukatja, he started working on sheep stations at a young age, moving from station to station for seasonal work. He only moved to Mimili when he met his wife. Mr Martin held many different roles within Mimili Community, from policeman to healthworker. He became one of the founding members of the art centre, working prolifically until the day of his passing.

Mr Martin painted Tjukurpa from around Piltati in the far west of the APY Lands, passed on to him by the men in his family. The strong body of work he left behind shows his commitment to passing this knowledge on to the next generation.

It’s important that we hold our culture, our stories, our connection to country strong for malatja-malatja (future generations) – that’s why I make paintings.
